What’s Your Yaoi?
Welcome to BRB, everyone! Here’s the next
part of my list. Enjoy!
List 16 to 20
16. Love and Marriage:
If tight-knit drama is your thing there is
an abundance of stories worth reading, but by far one of the best, and I mean very
best, is Youka Nitta’s ongoing series Haru wo Deitiata. After all, Ms. Nitta is
one of the grand masters when it comes to romantic drama. Iwaki and Katou’s
relationship spans years and never fails to elicit a wide range of emotions
from the reader. From the moment they first meet these two straight men are
drawn to each other and no matter the trial or tribulation they face they can’t
seem to let go. Gorgeous art with an in-depth plot, memorable characters and
some of the most amazingly hot sex scenes are what give Haru wo Daiteita its
uncompromising appeal.
17. I Love My Boss:
Here’s another trope I know every yaoi
enthusiast has read at least once. Ren’ai Shinan or Love is Difficult/Love is
Hard/Love is Impossible (take your pick of the English translations) is by
another one of my favourite mangakas Takatsuki Noboru. The plot is simple:
Hatano’s boss Honjou is kind of a messy, uncivilized, redneck looking fellow
that creeps out the female staff, and he asks Hatano for help to change his
appearance because he’s clueless as to what to do. His family wants him to find
a nice wife. So, because Hatano likes Honjou and admires his ability as an advertisement
designer, agrees to help with the makeover. Okay, like I said the plot is
simple. But, what makes this story great is not just the beautiful
art, but the personalities of the male leads. Honjou (seme) really is a genuine sweetheart, which is a rarity in yaoi, and because of the type of person he is, he can’t help but fall for his subordinate. And Hatano (uke), for all his ego-tripping,
is also a pretty nice guy. This was totally a feel good read, and I loved it.

18. My Love Interest is Straight with a
Kid:
Out of all the mangas I’ve read that use
this subject matter, Only Serious About You or Sorenari ni Shinken Nadesu by
Asou Kai, is one of only a handful that has a truly realistic plot. Nothing is
straightforward for Yoshioka, a gay man and long-time customer, of a restaurant
where Oosawa works as a cook. Oosawa is a father and divorcee who becomes the
centre of Yoshioka’s world. Yoshioka doesn’t have a good reputation; he’s had
his fair share of men, but wants a serious relationship with Oosawa.
Unfortunately, in order to convince Oosawa of his feelings and that they’d be
good together fate has to lend a hand. What made this yaoi touching was the
dynamics between the men and Oosawa’s little girl Chizu. Get a box of tissues,
you’re going to need it.
19. Bitchy Bottom:
I have a hard time with the whiny ukes,
they grate on my nerves, and what’s even worse are bitchy bottoms that just
don’t stop. The Tyrant Falls in Love isn’t really a favourite per se, but more
of a perfect match that fits the title criteria and I can appreciate its merit.
Takanaga Hinako’s on-going manga series Koisuru Boukun is popular, and her
characters certainly memorable. Morinaga is in serious love with his
homophobic, tyrannical sempai and he goes through hell and back to tame the
beast.
20. Silly Seme:
Kyoko Aiba’s Haisha Nate Kirai da / I Hate
the Dentist is beautifully illustrated, and funny, and it’s all thanks to the
silly, love-sick seme Hara, who has a fetish for teeth. In this yaoi the roles,
or more to the point, the characteristics of the uke and seme have been
swapped. Which provides a new and refreshing read. The dentist Hara is somewhat idiotic,
although sly, and Moriya, the uke, poses as a tough-talking straight shooter although he second guesses himself.
How strange is it when a sexy seme develops a nosebleed while receiving a
blowjob? Or he gets so over anxious he’s the one to cry and babble. Regardless of the twisted personality traits, I still can’t picture Moriya
topping Hara. Hara is still the seme.
