It's author Wednesday! Thanks for stopping by, sweeties. Please welcome to BRB erotic author Adrianne Brennan!
Tell us about yourself, Adrianne.
Well, I'm many things: a writer, a software engineer, a fitness nut, a geek, and a vegan. I live a pretty full life, some of which I'm more than happy to devote to my writing. Someday I wish to devote even more, but until I meet that dream I do my best to carve out what time I can and still have time for myself, my friends, and my family. I hail from Boston and live with the two most adorable kitties in the known universe. I may perhaps be biased in that assessment, but they are really the sweetest pair of cats I've ever been lucky to have as family. :)
When did you know you wanted to become a writer?
When I was ten. I had an assignment for class where I could choose a project, and I chose to write a short story illustrating photosynthesis. I accomplished it by writing a short sci-fi comedy about sentient vegetables traveling in space. Needless to say, once I discovered that I loved to write--and others loved to read it--I was hooked. I've been writing and dreaming ever since then of one day having my works published. I'm quite thrilled to state that I've made a childhood dream come true!
Who and/or what prompted you to write your first novel?
A series of very interesting dreams, and that novel is still in the works. It's been on hold while I worked on other projects and would need a LOT of editing. I began writing it when I was fourteen! I have great plans for that novel, and while it'll be a bit different from my other stories, it'll be in the fantasy genre.
Where and/or how do you find the greatest inspiration?
Definitely my dreams! I've literally dreamed up entire novels, some of which are still WIPs while others are currently out there for others to read.
What made you chose to write erotic literature in particular? And is there any other genre you’d like to write? And if so, why?
I sorta stumbled into it by accident, and still only really consider it to be a secondary genre for what I prefer writing in: paranormal, science fiction, and fantasy. I have yet to try writing an historical in addition to steampunk, and have an alternate history steampunk plot bunny that's been haunting me ever since I dreamed it. That's one work I have for further down the road....
Which appears first when contemplating a new project: A character, the plot and/or the title?
Plot AND character. The story isn't without the characters, and the character are nothing without the story. The title comes after those have been plotted and written.
What’s the hardest part of a novel for you to write: Beginning, middle and/or end? Why?
Depends on the novel, but I'd have to say the end. I've had a lot of short story writing projects which due to length requirements I had to make far shorter than my muse wanted to take them! And this is why I work on sequels. :)
Has your own life influenced your novels? And if so, how?
Sort of. There are a few scenes here and there in my works influenced by real life events. I have one that is in the sequel to Blood of the Dark Moon that is in the works, and it's quite a funny story. One of those "you just had to be there" moments. :D
Writing sex/romantic scenes can be a challenge for some authors. Do you find it difficult? If yes, how do you compensate? If no, where do you draw your inspiration?
This is an interesting issue for me, and I'll answer honestly: I don't normally find it in the least bit difficult, but I will say that there have been personal events in the past few years for me that have made it a challenge. Sometimes I am forced to take a hiatus or two while I struggle to get back into the game. Deadlines have helped in addition to a very patient (and active) muse. I have contemplated putting some of my experiences in my stories, if nothing else as a catharsis. :)
Do you have a method you use to write the sensual parts? Do you prefer the sex to be open and bold? Or left to the imagination?
I do a little bit of both depending on where I want the emphasis, what I want the tone of the story to be, how I want the plot to go, and the story's length in general. When in doubt, I trust my muse.
Are your characters based on people you know? Or are they completely fictitious?
They are almost never based on anyone whom I know, but sometimes I have people in my life who are inspired by a character or two that I write and identify with them personally.
Who is your favorite character, which you’ve created? And why?
That's like asking to pick a favorite child! I can't do that. :D I think there are many things which I love about my characters: Merideth's quirkiness, Amanda's strength, Tamar's wit, Marissa's bluntness. They all have something about them to love.
Can you tell us about your latest release? Give a synopsis.
Love Under Will, a short story in the Mammoth Book of Hot Romance, came out in the UK just a few weeks ago and is due in the US on Aug 23rd. Unlike my other works, it'll be out in the bookstores and I am uncertain if/when it'd be available as an ebook or Kindle.
It's a paranormal erotic romance between an angel and the fallen angel she has been assigned to "bring home", so to speak. Most of the story is set in Boston. In the story, I deal with topics such as gender changing angels, race, and sexuality. I had a LOT of fun with it and the concept of angels shedding bodies like a snake would shed its skin, and I really do think that the two main characters were made for each other. :)
What’s your newest WIP? And when we can expect a publication date?
I have a few WIPs right now: the fifth and last book of the Oath series, Blood and Spice (the sequel to Blood and Mint Chocolates), Shadows of the Dark Moon which is the sequel to Blood of the Dark Moon, plus some other irons in the fire.
How many novels do you have, that are currently published?
I honestly don't even remember offhand how many stories I have, but you can find me with the following publishers:
Love You Divine alterotica
Running Press/Constable & Robinson
You can read all about them here:
Where do you see your writing career in the next five to ten years?
More works out there, hopefully a wonderful conclusion to the ongoing Dark Moon series, and with any luck, just as many works in print as I do now in ebook format. :) And above all else, to continue loving what I do and having a passion for the craft. These things are always important!
