Kick-Ass Characters Every Writer Can Appreciate! #authors #writing #mustread #kickass

Kick-Ass Characters Every Writer Can Appreciate!

Welcome to BRB, everyone! Not only are the following characters memorable but they’re also endearing, and have become some of my personal favourites. Even though in most cases, these characters supposedly play a supporting role, they are integral to each plot. Without them, these stories just wouldn’t be the same. They are unique and provide inspirational templates which any writer can appreciate. Simply put, they’re awesome!

Best Selling Manga Series - Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa
Action-Adventure, Fantasy

The main story goes that after finishing their alchemy training, brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric attempt to bring their mother Trisha back with an alchemy ritual. But the transmutation backfires, and according to the law of alchemy, there is always an equivalent exchange. Edward loses his left leg while Alphonse is dragged through the Gate of Truth. Edward sacrifices his right arm to retrieve Alphonse’s soul, binding it to a suit of armour with a blood seal. There are many interesting characters in this series, but the one I favour is Roy Mustang, a twenty-nine-year-old State Alchemist and Edward’s superior working for the Amestris State Military. He’s a flame alchemist with a checkered past. He can set anything and anyone on fire with the snap of his fingers. His power is kick-ass!

Best Selling Novel SeriesHarry Potter and, well, any of the seven titles by JK Rowling
Urban Fantasy with splashes of the Supernatural and Paranormal

What can I say? Everyone knows Harry Potter, and if they don’t, they’ve haven’t been paying attention to the world of wizardry at all. Honestly, I’m a Tolkien fan by rights, but I still enjoy JK Rowling’s amazing imagination. My favourite character is Professor Severus Snape. Immediately, from the get-go, I sensed there was much more going on with the dark arts teacher. His level-headed, reserved and seemingly uncaring personality didn’t turn me off but intrigued, and I knew nothing could be farther from the true. I watched the movies first then read the books, so my perspective is a bit different from my bestie and her husband who are Potter fanatics (and that’s putting it mildly). Snape is a multilayered character who serves many purposes throughout the overall story arc, and if it wasn’t for him, I don’t think Harry would've survived. Love him!

The Alien Franchise – by Ridley Scott and others…
Science-Fiction Horror

In my humble opinion, the Alien franchise is the finest example of creepy science-fiction. There hasn’t been any movie before or since that’s even come close to obtaining such a cinematic legacy. To this day, Aliens remains hands-down, my favourite sci-fi movie. I watch it probably five times a year—not to mention I’ve got a Queen Alien sitting in my office along with some other little ones. But what really makes this movie…Ellen Ripely and her estrogen loaded battle against the big Ma-Ma alien. An incredible script and amazing CGI (considering the time period) along with Sigourney Weaver’s unforgettable performance made my lifetime. To have a female protagonist, and one that’s tough, intelligent but not egotistical who keeps her femininity intact is wonderful! Ellen Ripely is definitely my hero.

Best Selling Manga SeriesBleach by Tite Kubo
Action-Adventure, Supernatural, maybe even Paranormal

After hotheaded teenager Ichigo Kurosaki obtains the powers of a Soul Reaper (Shinigami ‘Death God’) from another Soul Reaper, Rukia Kuchiki, he inherits his parents’ destiny. But his new powers, come at a price. He takes on Rukia’s job, defending humans from evil spirits and guiding departed souls to the afterlife. This series has several story arcs with an underlying theme. Again, as with any action-adventure type series, there are many characters. Of course, I love Ichigo, who is one of the most powerful characters and main protagonist, but I also have a soft spot for Kisuke Urahara. He is the epitome of intelligence, grace and strength, and at times, he provides a touch of comedic relief. But there is much more to this ex-captain—inventor—scientist—genius. He is a pivotal character and the Ying to Souske Aizen’s Yang, so-to-speak.

So, those are four characters that I appreciate!
