Welcome to BRB, everyone! I’m an avid anime, manga, toy, Dragon and book collector. My reading preferences are fantasy, paranormal, thriller, romance, mystery, yaoi or just plain out there. And when I say “out there” I’m referring to stories that are dark, gritty and without a precise classification—the bizarre shit. In addition to my collection, I recently purchased a manga series under the thriller genre, and after reading the first volume, I couldn’t wait to share my review.
Monster by Naoki Urasawa is by far one of the best thrillers that I have ever come across in the manga realm. Mr. Urasawa’s art style is robust and memorable as it is dark. Which suits the near perfectly executed plot and dangerously addictive characters: protagonist Doctor Tenma and the antagonist Johan. You can disregard every other infamous villain put to paper: Hannibal Lecter, Sauron, Voldemort, et cetera, they are nothing short of incorrigible wannabes in comparison to Johan, aka the Monster.
Through a series of disturbing events Kenzo Tenma, a brilliant Japanese surgeon living and working in Germany makes a choice that rapidly turns into a personal nightmare in which he has to stop the abomination he helped to create. For every moment that passes, another person dies. And for Kenzo, it is a race against time. There is nothing pretty about this story. It is enthralling and forced me, as the reader, to question my ethics. If you enjoy suspense or just want to try something new, I high recommend Monster.
The anime series has received rave reviews and I'd love to watch it. But my searched for the DVD collection, seventy-four episodes done in five parts, has been fruitless. It is near impossible to find it at this point.
Happy Yaoi Hunting!
