Shiny Star - Yaoi Review #nanami #bookreview #yaoi #adult

Shiny Star, story and art by Nanami, is about the adult film industry. Hikaru is the top porn star and he has a contract that states he will only play the “top”. Masaya is a twenty-three year old university student who is straight, but decides after watching Hikaru perform in an intimate video, he wants to work with the adult entertainer, but also make Hikaru his. Regardless of what his manager says, Hikaru refuses to do a film with a smartass newcomer, especially when Masaya wants to top.

I read seven chapters in this series and it still isn’t complete. The two men make a bet because both refuse to bottom and then they start hanging out together, perhaps to test the waters, so-to-speak. But nothing major happens between them other than Masaya tries to kiss Hikaru and confess some type of feelings; explain what he wants. And, or course, their egos get in the way. What direction the story will go from the last page I read, is anyone’s guess, although I’m positive these men will wind up in a steamy relationship. And there is a brief appearance from Yamashita and Asaoka from Porno Superstar, which is comical.

As with the spin-off Porno Super, this yaoi has in-depth dialogue that makes me think Hikaru is trying to leave behind a tumultuous past, and Masaya is hiding something, but I can’t put my finger on it. It’s obvious he harbours some feelings for Hikaru, I just can’t tell if they’re genuine or not. Hikaru is a bit of a flake when it comes to certain things like taking directions (getting around the city), but he’s also very guarded, and for a adult entertainer that’s a na├»ve attitude, considering everything about him is in the public eye. I’m not sure who tickles my fancy more. Hikaru is endearing with his tough outer shell and soft inner flaws, while Masaya seems like he might be the strong silent type.
This yaoi is labelled as a romance and it definitely has that kind of feel to it, more so than the spin-off. But Yamashita and Asaoka have an entirely different relationship, which began strictly by a misunderstanding. I thoroughly enjoyed every page, I just wish there was more. 5 Stars!

Happy Yaoi Hunting!
