Collector at Heart - Blak Rayne #yaoi #collector #fun #manga #japanese

Aside from being an author, I’m also an artist and collector. And as such, it only seems natural that with my involvement in erotic/romance publishing, I’d take an interest in similar things, or what some might consider, pornographic material. And, sadly, I must confess, I do. As I’ve stated numerous times before, in my eyes, men are beautiful creatures. It doesn’t matter whether they’re tall, short, young or old I’m fascinated, and this also extends to the way men are portrayed in photography, modelling, art, and comics. Whatever the artistic medium, I find men and the male physique fascinating (there’s that word again). LOL One of the most exquisite mediums to display the male figure, a favourite I collect, is yaoi. You can laugh, but yaoi is truly a unique art form and one that has experienced increased popularity in the last decade.
There are so many yaoi so little time! LOL All right, now I'll get into serious mode. I'm a huge, and I mean, huge yaoi fan. I've been collecting everything from yaoi manga to shitajiki (pencil boards), autographed cells, OVAs, prints, original art and anything else to do with this form of Japanese porn since…I can't remember when.
Now you ask, "What is yaoi, Blak?"
As everyone knows there are many genres within erotic literature, and the Japanese, like any other culture, has its own. There is Yaoi, Bara, Shonen-ai, Yuri, etc. Yaoi is an acronym and it means yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nacho. Simply put, ‘there's no climax, no point, no meaning’. It's used to describe anime and/or manga, which concentrate on gay relationships, with graphically portrayed sex and little to no plot. Also, yaoi is a popular Japanese term for female-oriented fictional media that focuses on gay or gay-romantic relationships, usually created by female authors.
Adding to this: Yaoi is hard-core compared to Shonen-ai. Shonen-ai is what I like to call the fluffy stuff–the attraction, holding hands and kissing–but usually never any sex. Puppy love! Yuri: Is the opposite of Yaoi and intended for a male and/or lesbian audience; women on women. Bara: Is erotic Japanese manga written for a male audience. The characters are muscular (muscle bound), there's usually no relationship between them (no seme or uke) and nine times out of ten there's rape involved, gang banging, or some type of forced sex. And, this is supposed to be more appealing to men or gay men? Hmm….
In my humble opinion there are only a select few yaoi I’d label as my top choices, and here’s my reasoning. Three elements are needed to create a really good and well-balanced yaoi: artistry, storyline and memorable characters. Artistry is a must, as most yaoi come in manga (comic book format). So, you've got to have the look. Storyline, this should be self-explanatory. No matter what you read, you want a decent plot. And memorable characters are those that stick out from the rest, they've got a certain appearance and personality that easily draws the reader in.
In the beginning, yaoi was virtually an unknown in North America; authors were limited, and distribution unheard of. To actually purchase a yaoi manga even doujinshi (fan made comics), could only be done through places like eBay. This was around the mid to late 80s and into the 90s. Yaoi from that time period, have since been labelled classics, for the simple fact, they were pioneers, leading the way for a tsunami of yaoi in the future.
If you’re interested in sampling a little yaoi or maybe you’ve always wondered about the history, I can suggest a couple for your reading and/or viewing pleasure. Several bigger classics that come to mind are Ai no Kusabi and Zetsuai 1989, Bronze: Zetsuai since 1989, Bronze Final. Ai no Kusabi and Zetsuai are quintessential yaoi, meaning…if you want the angst, bad boy, rip-your-heart-out, passion, dirty hot sex, can’t-stop-cryin’ gay erotica with an unhappy ending, you’ve made the right choice. ANK and ZET follow the traditional yaoi writing guidelines to near perfection with their whiney ukes and sexy, domineering semes. Don’t be fooled by the cheesy, old style anime artistry in the OVAs, both stories are intended for an 18+ audience–no minors allowed!
Ai no Kusabi written by: Rieko Yoshihara
Zetsuai 1989 written by: by Minami Ozakis
After decades of reading, viewing, and collecting yaoi I can honestly say that my tastes have broadened and I have grown to love more and more of this unique erotic medium. Yaoi has influenced my own writing, given me a wider range of male archetypes to work with. There are so many different authors to choose from, even men are reading and creating yaoi, and North American artists have jumped on the bandwagon. The diversity is amazing, and now, with computer technology, which has given us eBook publishing, the choices are seemingly endless. If you haven’t, maybe try reading a yaoi. Who knows…you might enjoy it!
