Interview with Michael Mandrake!!!

Welcome everyone! Today I've got a multi-talented author who has graced me with nothing but kind words from the first moment we met! Michael/Rawiya is the type of person to always show unwavering support. We did a chat around Christmas time together and it was hoot, and he/she's got a great sense of humour too! With 25 pieces of literature accepted for publication you know this author's got to be doing something right!

1. Who is Rawiya / Michael Mandrake / Blmorticia? Tell us about yourself.

Well, the triad was born in Chicago, and is happily married with two lovely children. I’ve been writing since I was a teen but only began publishing because of the encouragement and support I got from my friends and family.

2. When did you know you wanted to become a writer?

When I was on the verge of losing my job in 2009, I got a letter from a gentleman who as an editor and saw my story on the erotica writers association website. He wanted to use it for his anthology. Although it did not make the cut, it opened a door that I had never decided to step into until 2010. That and people telling me that my writing was god enough to publish as well as my fanfiction fans gave me confidence to submit and voila, here I am!

3. Who and/or what prompted you to write your first novel?

Well, my first novel is actually still in the editor’s queue. African Sun: Sakina Over the Serengeti. A possible contract is in the works which is why I won’t give more detail. What prompted me was proving to myself that I could write longer works. I knew that I was good at short stories 20K and under, but Sakina was a challenge that I felt needed to succeed at immediately.

4. Where and/or how do you find the greatest inspiration?

In the music I listen to, my family and friends as well as the multitude of people I come in contact with on the net. I am an internet junkie.

5. What made you chose to write m/m literature in particular? And is there any other genre you’d like to write? And if so, why?

Hmm, I love men, hot gay men having sex with a lot of tension involved. Another genre? Well, I write hetero from time to time and I would like to get back into that because it is still the bread and butter of erotica. Not to mention, I want to be multifaceted, not pigeonholed. I want to prove to my readers that I can write entertaining stories regardless of the kind.

6. Which appears first when contemplating a new project: A character, the plot and/or the title?

The Plot…always. The story idea pops in my head and I immediately start writing it down, then come the characters; what I want my men and or women to look like.

7. What’s the hardest part of a novel for you to write: Beginning, middle and/or end? Why?

Ugh, the end because I usually like to tie in the title or I am worried that I did not cover all the bases in my story. I also wonder, did I satisfy my reader. I have been told that I really have nothing to worry about on the last one, so I guess I can simmer down.

8. Has your own life influenced your novels? And if so, how?

No, not really. I mean, only in my hetero writing to a certain point only because I am a sexual person who is pretty open minded.

9. Writing sex scenes can be a challenge for some authors. Do you find it difficult? If yes, how do you compensate? If no, where do you draw your inspiration?

*laughs* Not difficult at all because I love sex. Reading it, writing it, watching in on film. Not a lot makes me uncomfortable. My inspiration may come from a movie, and adult film perhaps, that I saw, or just a dream situation that came to me. I do have visions of what I want my sex stories to be like.

10. Do you have a method you use to write the sensual parts? Do you prefer the sex to be open and bold? Or left to the imagination?

This is a toughie. I don’t really have a method. It depends on the story. Sometimes because of the characters and their personalities it can be either or. I am a firm believer in letting the people in my story guide me. I don’t do outlines; I just let them speak to me.

11. Are your characters based on people you know? Or are they completely fictitious?

Nope, I wish I did know such hot men. They’re all completely fictitious.

12. Who is your favourite character, which you’ve created? And why?

Oh wow, this is a tough one too. I love ALL my characters but I guess right now I would have to say the one I am writing in my novel and its sequel. Doctor Nicholas Fairlight. The doctor is the chief of staff at Bdnoego hospital in my novel, African Sun. He is a Caucasian bisexual male, too smart for his own good, and is very kinky which I love.

13. Can you tell us about your latest release? Give a synopsis.

The latest release is True Meaning of Love from XOXO publishing. An emotional story that involves a hot male couple with regular problems. The couple has an argument and is faced with some adversity once one of them is involved in a serious accident. I am very grateful to XOXO for publishing it because I do really love the story.

14. What’s your newest WIP? And when we can expect a publication date?

My newest WIP is part two to a story that was just accepted as part of a Valentine’s Day Anthology called Only When I Lose Myself. I hope that to be published by the same company in March. *crosses fingers*

15. How many novels do you have, that are currently published? Please list all the publishers, so the readers can locate you.

Well I have more shorts out. African Sun is my first novel but as I stated it is still in negotiation. Right now, you can find me with XOXO publishing, STARbooks Press, and Xcite books for my seldom used third pseudonym, Blmorticia. And I have two stories coming out with Sizzler Intoxication/ E-Renaissance. I also have free reads on the exciting new website, everynighterotica.com.

16. Where do you see your writing career in the next five to ten years?

I aspire to be a best-selling author who has successfully changed people’s views about sex and love. I hope to be editing my own anthologies someday, assisting the new talent to fulfill their dreams.
